The Truth of God's Word.

Scripture states, “And in the thirty-seventh year of the exile of Jehoiachin king of Judah, in the twelfth month, on the twenty-fifth day of the month, Evil-merodach king of Babylon, in the year that he began to reign, graciously freed Jehoiachin king of Judah and brought him out of prison. And he spoke kindly to him and gave him a seat above the seats of the kings who were with him in Babylon. So Jehoiachin put off his prison garments. And every day of his life he dined regularly at the king's table, and for his allowance, a regular allowance was given him by the king, according to his daily needs, until the day of his death, as long as he lived” (Jeremiah 52:31-34).

I’m sharing these verses with you because the topic for our sermon this weekend is on the reliability of the Word of God (Q: Is God’s Word real? A: The Word of our God Stands forever!). This is the last chapter of the book of Jeremiah and it ends with Jehoiachin, the Jewish king, becoming an imprisoned disgrace. Jehoiachin did not listen to the Word of the Lord and he found out that God really meant what He said. Judah fell to the powerful Babylonians and Jehoiachin was hauled off to Babylon for the rest of his life.

But the reason I bring this up is because of the physical document that was found in the ruins of the hanging gardens of Babylon. This document seen at this link, is in cuneiform and it talks about a king from the Jews named Jehoiachin who was given a “regular allowance” from the king of Babylon. This fits the Word of our God from Jeremiah 52 and it also shows that the events of Jeremiah are real and historical.

Why does this matter? This matters because there are many critics who would like to reduce the Word of God to a myth. But it is far from a myth. Time and again God opens up historical insights that point to the veracity of the written Word of God. The Word of God is truth (John 17:17) and the Word of our God will last forever.
