Money.

Do we love it, hate it, or admire it? 1 Timothy 6:10 says, “the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.” So can we still love money? Or should we hate money?

This weekend we are studying the Proverbs and the wisdom they provide for us on the topic of money. The simple answer is that we are to recognize the powerful role (admire) that money plays in our daily existence. Jesus talked extensively about money; He alluded to it in several parables and complimented the woman who dropped in two tiny copper pieces of money. Jesus also famously told the teachers of the day to “render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and unto God the things that are God’s” (Mark 12:17). Money was and is a tense topic but Jesus did not shy away from it.

Money is not inherently good or evil. Now our affection and attitude toward money is what the Proverbs address.

Let’s take a brief look at what our attitude toward money can be, with the help of the Holy Spirit. Because the reality is, if we honestly read through all that Scriptures has to say about money, we will find ourselves lacking the purity that God requires. And this is, once again, why we are so in need of Jesus’ selfless giving.

Proverbs 10:22 says, “The blessing of the LORD makes rich, and he adds no sorrow with it” (Proverbs 10:22).

When God gives wealth, it is through a system of hard work and personal blessing by God Himself. To each of us He has given the ability to work hard and plan in order to gain financial stability for the benefit of our family, our church, opportunities for generosity and hard times. God blesses us and with His blessing there is no sorrow added. We thank God for the blessings He has showered on us!
